Swine Flu Vaccine 2009

Swine flu vaccine accelerated until September?

July 17, 2009 - Vaccine against swine influenza pandemic must be fast-tracked, with vaccination beginning in mid-September - shortly after the schools open.

That recommendation was a unanimous vote today by the National Security biodefense (NBSB), an influential board of external advisors to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Derivation of the swine flu vaccine in September but all means spend the majority of preliminary clinical trials of vaccine safety and effectiveness. But it means about 60 million to nearly 80 million doses at the same time, the CDC hopes that the next wave of the pandemic to hit U.S.

"We can not wait beyond mid-August [making a decision] if the vaccine supply is to be in mid-September," the panel of the pandemic influenza task force provides its recommendations. "A key goal is that some [independent] novel H1N1 vaccine available in mid-September 2009, if necessary."

Why rush through a vaccine for swine flu? The first wave of the swine flu pandemic is only beginning to reflux in the U.S. However, the virus spreads rapidly among children - and opening the nation's schools begin in late August.

"A second wave is likely to occur as early as fall 2009," the recommendations state. "The best estimates suggest that the infection rate is two to three times higher than expected with seasonal influenza. The second wave could peak in October, but we must anticipate the emergence in September."

Starting dose is intended for the most severely affected by the pandemic to date: babies, schoolchildren, pregnant women and adults with risk factors for severe influenza disease. Next week, the CDC vaccine advisory board will recommend a priority list to exactly get the vaccine first.

The recommendation NBSB puts into words the fear that government officials have so far expressed only in private.

"After the vaccine only after the peak of the [pandemic] can be worse than no vaccine at all: It incurs all the risks and costs with profit potential," says the recommendation.

The National Science Advisory Board biodefence Sebelius in emergency preparedness for biological threats. Whether to act on the decision NBSB it is - and, ultimately, to President Barack Obama.

Why use a vaccine that has not completed testing of safety and efficacy? Because we have a lot of experience with similar vaccines, concluded the flu vaccine NBSB working group, led by the University of Utah flu expert Andrew Pavia, MD.

Swine flu pandemic is one of type A influenza virus H1N1. For decades, a Type A H1N1 vaccine has been part of the vaccine against seasonal flu, and the new vaccine is made in exactly the same way.

Fast track means the vaccine doses in the best guess, but that is an assumption based on the well established seasonal dose of H1N1 vaccine.
